He received no pay but was given a chance to learn the skills of the trade. Some apprentices were treated very badly by their masters. At the end of seven years an apprentice became a journeyman, which meant he was free to go and seek work for himself in another town. If he wanted to become a master craftsman he would have to produce a masterpiece, which would then be examined by the members of the guild. If he was successful he could then set up his very own workshop and take on apprentices of his own. (10 + 2 marks)
Good work, full marks awarded for Section B.
Many people in Dublin lived in overcrowded tenement buildings in 1945, but from the 1950s, new Corporation housing estates were built and people were moved to these from the inner cities. Later, the Corporation built tower blocks such as Ballymun. In all cities and towns, County Councils or private developers have built large housing estates on the outskirts. In the countryside, the old 2-3 room thatched cottages have been nearly completely replaced by modern bungalows. Another huge change is that all houses now have electricity and running water. (6 marks)

Excellent answering. Well done.

| Section A: Question 1 | 62/100 |
(i) In your opening paragraph you identified that you agree with the author. You should state the reasons that you intend to discuss in your answer in your opening paragraph. You have made points and used quotes effectively; but you will get more marks if you can analyse how quotes relate to question asked. For example, having discussed the topic of comedy you could make a statement like 'Comedy alters the way we feel about life as it challenges our perceptions of ordinary things like fashion and hair and reminds us of what is truly important in in our world.' In your second paragraph you discussed 'Slumdog Millionaire' but you failed to gain marks as you did not relate this discussion to the question asked. You need to make sure that you follow the PQE formula as it is effective:
Other points you may have included were:
In your introduction you need to justify your position- explain why, in brief, you agree with the author. Again, you will get more marks if you use concrete examples from the text. You made some interesting and thoughtful points, but they are relevant only in the context of the question asked. All answers, even personal responses, need to be firmly rooted in the text you are responding to. Review the question asked as you progress through each paragraph and this will ensure you stay on task. If you state that you enjoy watching a film after reading a novel, say how this is similar/ different to the author. This relates your response back to the text. (iii) This answer was a good attempt. Questions on style come up frequently and are worth looking at closely before your exam. You considered two aspects of style that are very similar and may be better discussed together (narrative style, conversational tone). To attain maximum marks you would need to discuss three distinct features of style. 'Attention grabbing statements' are exaggeration. Do you feel this is a feature of style of the author? I'm not sure there is enough evidence in the piece to support this. |
| Section A: Question 2 | 60/100 |
Essay - Interesting idea used which is modelled on popular literature at the moment. However the reader would find the plot a little too complex for a short story and occasionally hard to decipher. A simple plot with dynamic and engaging characters always works well. Lovely ending, especially last line. Some very good moments of descriptive writing throughout the piece. Overall structure would benefit from tighter planning. |

Ceist 1: Ceapadóireacht C. a. When picking the Alt Nuachtáin / irise, you must be careful not to just write out an aiste. There’s a certain way of writing an article that isn’t the same as just writing an aiste. The first half of this Alt is like a general aiste on fadhbanna an tsochaí, and only in the second half of the essay do you mention the “agallamh” on which the alt was to be based. For this alt, you were even required to use more than one agallamh. With the alt, it’s a good idea to put in quotes (make them up) or something like that to make it look like it’s actually written for a newspaper or magazine. Maybe give it a headline, or give each paragraph or section its own separate tagline or mini-headline. Most of the marks for this essay however, go for grammar. There are a few mistakes regarding comhréir (syntax), and briathra. It would be worth looking at these again. Also there are a few spelling mistakes, (e.g. caill and ciall are two different words) but your stór focal is quite good. |
| Section A: Question 2 | 23/35 |
Ceist 2: Léamhthuiscint A. Try to use your own words more and don’t take big chunks from the text itself. Be careful of using sentences from the text just because the word in the question is in it. |
| Section A: Question 3 | 28/35 |
Ceist 2: Léamhthuiscint B. Same comments as above. |

| Section A: Question 1 | 40/60 |
A short question: overall fair standard. It is important to read questions carefully and answer exactly what is being asked. Also read over your own answers to avoid silly mistakes which will cost marks. Always attempt an answer never leave a blank, even if you don't know the answer make an educated guess. q5: you never mentioned that it is a preservation method. q6: biodegradable broken down by bacteria not air. q7,8,9: not known, learn this material.< |
| Section A: Question 2 | 45/80 |
A compulsory worth 20% of the marks therefor it is very important that you answer this question well. Your answer lacked depth and you misintrepreted questions and did fully understand the terminology of the questions. Make sure you understand discuss, describe state etc. This information is on the inside of your exam papers. Part a, you were required to make referene to healthy eating guidelines, which you failed to and as a result you lost marks. |
| Section A: Question 3 | 22/50 |
Another poorly answered question, material not known as well as it should. |
| Section A: Question 4 | 30/80 |
Very poor answer, this is worth 20% of your total marks and need to be answered well if you are to achieve a good result. Your answer lacked depth and you did not know the material as well as you should. You frequently strayed off the point. All statements need to be supported for full marks at higher level. Overall alot of work required between now and june, focus on the questions that you are sure of coming up ie social studies q5 and your elective. Any time you mention a nutrient you must state its function. There are 3 chapters in your book covering this section. It is a guaranteed question and it would be worth knowing this section really well. Do your best with the rest of the material. Good Luck!!!!!! |
